The Emperor's accession Flashcards
Tiberius political
Civil career began with his defence of King Archelaus. He also appeared before senate as an advocate for the Laodiceans who had appeal for relief because of losses in an earthquake

Tiberius then became in turn quaestor, praetor and consul all before being old enough. he was then given another consulship a few years later and then given Tribunician power for a five year period
Tiberius then, in hight of his career, retired from public life. Augustus complained that this was an act of desertion. He went to Ostia and then Rhodes. Rumour that augustus was ill which made people criticise him. Augustus forced him to stay in Rhodes. He became known as ‘the exile’. T was then recalled realising he was in danger from people who wanted to kill him. He returned to Rome and had been away for 7 years.
The consuls introduced a measure which gave T joint control of Provinces with Augustus. Augustus called him an outstanding general but also disliked him aswell.
Tiberius revealed Augustus’ death after death of Agrippa.
Tiberius Civil
Civil career began with his defence of King Archelaus. He also appeared before senate as an advocate for the Laodiceans who had appeal for relief because of losses in an earthquake
Introduced his son Drusus into public life. Augustus’ sons died and Augustus adopted Tiberius as a son and also Agrippa postumus. Tiberius was made to adopt his nephew Germanicus.
Claudius Political career
Claudius was disregarded by Augustus and given no honours except a seat in the college of augurs. He was listed in his will among heirs of the third degree (people who were practically strangers) and only a sixth part of his estate.
When Tiberius succeeded, he asked for some public offices and T sent him the consular insignia. He also asked for duties as well as the empty title of consul. He then lost hopes and renounced a political career, living a private life in Campania.
Equites twice choose him as their official representative to the consuls, and when C appeared at public shows they would all rise and take off their cloaks as a mark of honour.
Senate voted that he should be made an extraordinary member of the Augustan priesthood, and that he should have the honour of addressing the senate among men of consular rank. Tiberius vetoed all of this saying Claudius’ ill health prevented him. When T died, C was again listed in the third decree.
First consulship he was nearly removed for taking too long to set up statues of Gaius brothers nero and drusus.
Tiberius: Military career/experience
Was a military tribune in the Canrabrian campaign. He then took the army east and restored kingdom of armenia to Tigranes
Tiberius goverened Transalpine Gaul, and then battled in Pannonia and Germany. There he took some German prisoners across to the rhine and settled in new homes on the gallic bank. His exploits were rewarded with an ovation and a regular triumph.
Given another 5 years tribunician power with task of pacifying Germany and the parthian envoys: They presented themselves to augustus with messages from their king and were told to also report to TIberius (big heir hint!!).
T sent to suppress the Illyrian revolt (Big deal cuz they are an active force). T was successful by finally reducing the whole of Illyrian. T voted a triumph. The money gained from selling the Illyrian spoils Tiberius put towards restoring temple of Concord under his and his brother Drusus’ name
Death of Varus meant to disaster in Germany. T always consulted military council before taking action and was praised for his attention to detail. Imposed severe discipline on his men. He would go to battle more confident if light by which he was working suddenly went out night before.
