A

-youths increasingly had more time
-labour saving devices like washing machine meant girls didn’t help mothers anymore + boys no longer part of national service after 1960
-they dressed different + listened different music
-post war baby boom swelled teenage population + survey 1959 estimated 5m
-youths had money buy records + fashion to create own culture + late 50s to shows aimed at them

A

-no access to credit only if married or from father
-many made own clothes
-chain stored provided their clothes but didn’t allow unique individual look
-couldn’t buy scooters or cars + had to get lifts from male mods + often experiences sexual abuse as price

What was the mods v rockers riot

A

-numerous clashed but most serious was organised fighting in holiday resorts like Clacton, Megate + Brighton 1964
-Brighton — fighting lasted 2 days with large contingents police struggling restore order
-public reaction was moral panic with hysterical descriptions knife wielding hooligans
