What are the elements of Art?
line, shape, form, texture, value, space, colour
What are the principles of Art?
Balance, unity, harmony, emphasis, variety, movement, rhythm, proportion, graduation
What is form?
Forms are three dimensional shape – length, width and depth
What is space?
Shapes are flat and two-dimensional.
What is Balance?
– the equilibrium in a work of art:
a. the same/even on both sides - symmetrical – equal balance
b. different or uneven - asymmetrical)
c. radial – when elements or objects in an art radiate from a central point
(like the sun or a daisy) or based on a circle (like a wheel)
What is Unity?
- refers to some kind of connection between all the visual elements in a work of
art, such as the use of similar lines, shapes or colours; it shows a sense of wholeness.
What is Harmony?
– refers to how well all the visual elements work together in a work of art; it is
a way of combining or blending similar elements in an artwork to accent their similarities.
Elements which are in harmony should have some kind of logical progression or
relationship.
What is emphasis?
(also known as Contrast) – the focus or most important element that stands
out in a work of art such as the colour, value, line, shape, form, space, texture.
What is Variety?
differences in a work of art to create interest or changes, such as
differences in line, shape, value, colour, texture, forms, etc.
What is movement?
creating the look and feeling of action; guides the viewer’s eye
throughout the work of art.
What is rhythm?
(also known as Repetition) – visual movement; repetition/pattern in line,
shape, form, value, colour, texture & space
What is proportion?
refers to the relationship of certain elements to the whole and to each
other.
What is graduation?
– gradual changes in line, shape, form, value, texture, and space.
What is value?
Value describes the amount of lightness or darkness of a colour
