Social effects of flooding
• death, floods especially flash floods will kill people.
- flood water travel v. Quickly and weighs a lot, people get swept away by floods.
- debris and objects easily picked up by floodwater, and can kill person if hit w. debris.
• LEDC more deaths than MEDC. MEDC, people and govt are better prepared, better responses.
•swear pipes broken, raw sewage into floodwater; two effects.
- contaminates drinking water- cholera, LEDC no available drinking water.
- sewage into people homes, difficult to clean.
• LEDCs famines can follow floods which can lead to even more deaths. Flood destroy farmland, as farmland develop on floodplain. May contaminate the farmland, cattle killed by floods- people starving - source of food and source of income to buy food with.
Economic impacts of flooding
•property damage, water cause a lot of damage to property, and when it picks up large chunks of debris such as cars. Powerful floods can even dislodge buildings from foundations.
- MEDC property damage is extensive as people lots of expensive possessions. Not case in LEDCs.
- extensive damage to infrastructure
