- in 1914, before the first world war, scotland led the world in shipbuilding and engineering, iron, coal and steel but there were signs all was not well.
-however these industries were all heavy industries and relied on each other’s successes; - these heavy industries employed most of scotland’s workforce

- however the increased demand in production made the fall in demand worse in the post war years.

electronics, car, radio and aircraft production & chemical industry; - problem for scotland was these new industries were in south of england;
- as such, it did little to help scottish employment
