The Eden basin Flashcards
Where is the Eden basin located?
In north-west England in the lake district and the pennies.
What causes flooding downstream here?
The extreme weather upstream
What are characteristics of the Eden basin?
- Higher rainfall than national average, due to relief and mountains promote orographic rainfall.
- long and narrow, which increases lag time.
- The slopes within the basin are steep

What type of rock makes up the basin?
- at the higher ground of the river it is more impermeable rock. e.g. igneous rock.
- at the rest of the basin it is permeable rock e.g. limestone.
What land use changes have effected the Eden basin?
Farming, construction, deforestation
How has farming impacted the Eden basin?
1.more intense farming has caused land to become more compact, from heavy machinery and trampling. 30% increase in cattle between 2000 and 2009
2. compaction reduces infiltration and increases surface runoff, increased risk of flooding.
3. grazing has reduced the amount of vegetation, reduced interception
How has construction impacted the Eden basin?
- built up areas are increasing e.g. Eden Gate development
- surfaces in built up areas are impermeable.
- some developments are built on floodplains.
How has deforestation impacted the Eden basin?
- has been occurring for thousands of years to provide timber and land and much of the Eden basins forest cover has been removed.
- less trees = less interception and therefore increased risk of flooding.
