the earths atmosphere & resources Flashcards
state a method for reducing the carbon footprint made through use of fossil fuels, then explain what it is
carbon capture & storage, pump carbon produced from the combustion of fossil fuels into porous rocks deep underground that act as carbon stores
state the 5 atmospheric pollutants and how theyre mainly produced
carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and particulates, mostly come from incomplete & complete combustion, use of fossil fuels and diesel engines
explain how is water made potable
large metal mesh collects larger objects, settlement tank allows soil to settle to be removed, aluminium sulfate and lime makes sediment clump together to be removed, chlorine added to kill harmful bacteria, PH of water is checked to make sure its neutral, then pumped off
explain how sewage water is treated
screening removes large parts, primary sedimentation seperates sludge from liquid, liquid is sent to biological treatment, then secondary sedimentation uses bacteria to further break down harmful matter, sometimes water is disinfected at this point and put into rivers etc, also the sludge from before is digested by small organisms and then sent to biogas generators
