The Earth's System Flashcards
Includes the rocks that make up Earth
Geosphere (Lithosphere)
Major Divisions of Geosphere
Crust, Mantle, Core
2 Types of Crust
Oceanic Crust & Continental Crust
Oceanic Crust
- outermost solid layer
- composed of basaltic rocks
- thinner (7km)
Continental Crust
- thicker (25 -70km)
- one-third of the Earth’s surface
- granitic and felsic rocks
thickest layer of the geosphere
Mantle
- The only liquid layer, made up of iron and nickel
- Responsible for Earth’s magnetic field
Outer Core
Inner Core
solid and distinct from the outer core
most of the Earth’s sulfur is in here
covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface
Hydrosphere
The frozen water part of the system
Cryosphere
A mixture of gasses that surrounds the planet. shield us from the UV radiation
Atmosphere
Composition of Earth’s Atmosphere
Nitrogen - 78 %
Argon - 0.9%
Oxygen - 21 %
Neon - 0.1%
Layers of Earth’s Atmosphere
Exosphere
Thermosphere
Mesosphere
Stratosphere
Troposphere
Troposphere
- most of Earth’s weather happens here
- densest and atmospheric layer
- home to Earth’s ozone layer
- cloud & weather free
Stratosphere
