The Earth's Atmosphere Flashcards
Temperature
The degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment.
A measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a sample of matter, expressed in terms of units or degrees designated on a standard scale.
Altitude
The height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
How do we describe Earth’s Atmosphere?
- Earth’s Gaseous Envelope
- The earth is completely surrounded by “a sea of air” known as the atmosphere. Air is in fact a mixture of many gases.
Atmosphere
Atmosphere is a layer of gases around Earth. We usually call it air. It is 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, And 1% of trace gases including Argon and Carbon Dioxide
Layers of the Atmosphere
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere
Troposphere
The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth’s atmosphere. We live in the troposphere. Weather happens in this layer. Most clouds are found in the troposphere.
Stratosphere
The stratosphere is the second layer (going upward) of Earth’s atmosphere. The ozone layer is within the stratosphere.
Mesosphere
This is the coldest layer.
Protects Earth from meteor,
Thermosphere
Hottest layer of the earth’s atmosphere. Also, the Aurora Borealis (northern lights) occurs in this layer.
Exosphere
The atmosphere is extremely thin here. The upper part of this layer is the beginning of true space.
Some manmade satellites orbit the Earth within this layer.
