The Earth And Solar System Flashcards
What is a planet? What does it not produce?
A spherical body that orbits a star. It does not produce its own light but reflects light from the sun.
What is the name given to the path the planets take around the sun?
Orbits!
Characteristics of a planets orbit?
Elliptical and move anti-clockwise.
What are the four inner rocky planets?
Mercury
Venus
Earth
Mars
What are the four gas giant planets?
Jupiter
Saturn
Uranus
Neptune
What is a moon?
A natural satellite of a planet.
What is a comet?
A small lump of ice, dust and gas. As it approaches the sun it vaporises and develops a distinctive tail.
What is an asteroid?
A small rocky body that orbits the sun.
What is gravity?
It provides the force needed for the orbital movement of planets, comets, moons and artificial satellites.
What can artificial satellites be used for?
Communications-satellite television and phone calls.
Earth observation-weather forecasting, tracking storms and pollution, spying and satellite photography.
Navigation-GPS
Astronomy-looking into outer space from our solar system.
What is a star?
A ball of gas (mostly hydrogen and helium) that produces its own energy by nuclear fusion.
