What was agreed at Yalta?

A

Germany would be split into four zones with each of the allies getting a zone. Berlin would also be divided into four zones. The USSR would gone on to fight against Japan. eastern Europe would hold elections to decide how they should be governed. Nazi’s would be prosecuted.

Stalin wanted to take more reparations for Germany to cripple them but Truman blocked it. Britain and the USA denied The USSR an naval base in the mediteranian. Truman refused the USSR a share in Japan

Why did Stalin blockade Berlin?

A

Due to Marshall aid West Germany began to recover. East Germany was in poverty and there was hunger. East Germans were moving to West Germany as it was a nicer place to live and this made Stalin Jealous so he blockaded Berlin to stop the supplies getting to West Berlin.

Why did the Berlin blockade fail?

A

The allies got round the blockade by airlifting supplies into Berlin(June 1948). Stalin couldn’t shoot the planes down since it would be see. As an act of war. When it was clear the blockade had failed Stalin reopened communications.
