What is the outer ear?
Part of the ear you can see. Also called the pinna
What is the ear canal?
Tube that runs from the outer ear to the inner ear.
What is ear wax?
Protects the ear and traps dirt and fights infection.
What is the ear drum?
Thin layer of tightly stretched skin. Vibrates when sound waves hit it.
What is the hammer?
One of three tiny bones in the ear. It moves when the ear drum vibrates.
What is the anvil?
Second tiny bone in the ear. Moved by the hammer.
What is the stirrup?
The third tiny bone in the ear. Moved by the anvil
What is the cochlea?
Spiral tube. When the stirrup moves, fluid inside the cochlea moves. Hearing receptors turn the movement into signals
What is the auditory nerve?
Carries messages from the cochlea to the brain. The brain makes sense of these signals as sounds
