what was the Domesday book?
It was a document of a survey for the whole of England
why was the Domesday book needed?
To get more money
To know who owned land
why in 1086?
Because there were threats and attacks
How was the information gathered?
Sheriffs and soldiers were sent to every village to question the people. The questions they asked was about the land ownership, and ask what the land was worth.
which areas were no included in the Domesday book? Why?
The Northern parts of England were not included, because they weren’t fully under the Norman control.
London and Winchester were separate from the Domesday book and they had their own taxes.
what questions were asked?
Who owns the manors? Who owns It now? How many ploughs are there?, How many owned by lords and peasants? How many villages are there? How many mills are there?
What does the fact that Domesday book was collated tell you about the Norman government?
They were organised and efficient and wanted to help the country much as they could.
