The divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
What is the order of the nervous system?
- Nervous system leads to peripheral nervous system and central nervous system
- Central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord
- Peripheral nervous system is made up of autonomic nervous system and somatic nervous system
- Autonomic nervous system leads to sympathetic branch and parasympathetic branch
What is the spinal cords job in the CNS?
Carries messages using neurons to and from the brain to the PNS
What is meant by an arc reflex?
Neural circuit that begins with a sensory neuron at a receptor and ends with a motor neuron at an effector
What is the peripheral nervous systems main function?
To relay nerve impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body and from the body back to the CNS
What are both parts of the PNS called?
- Somatic
- Autonomic
What is the somatic nervous system?
Transmits information to and from senses and to and from CNS
- Voluntary movements
- Skeletal muscles and bones
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Transmits information to and from internal organs to sustain life processes
- Involuntary movements
- Heartbeat + breathing
What is the parasympathetic branch?
Conserves and stores resources (constricts pupils, stimulates tear glands).
What is the sympathetic branch?
Activates arousal and energy (dilates pupils, accelerates heart).
