The divisions of the nerous system Flashcards
Central and peripheral (somatic and autonomic) nervous system
What is the nervous system?
The nervous system is a specialised network of cells in the human body and is our primary internal communication system. It is based on electrical and chemical signals.
What are the two main functions of the nervous system?
- To collect, process, and respond to information in the environment.
- To coordinate the workings of different organs and cells in the body.
What are the division of the nervous system?
The nervous system can be subdivided in to the central and peripheral nervous systems. The peripheral nervous system can then be divided in to the autonomic and somatic nervous systems, Then the autonomic nervous system can be further divided in to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems.

The Nervous System
Central (NS) Peripheral (NS)
Brain Somatic (NS)
Spinal cord Autonomic (NS)
-Sympathetic (Ns)
-Parasympathetic (NS)
What is the central nervous system?
Consists of the brain and spinal cord and is the origins of commands and decisions.
What is the brain?
The brain is the centre of all conscious awareness. Different regions carry out different functions.
What is the spinal cord?
The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. It passes messages to and from the brain and connects nerves to the PNs. It is also responsible for reflex actions.
What is the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system transmits messages via millions off neurons, to and from the central nervous system.
What is the somatic nervous system?
It controls muscle movement and receives information from sensory receptors. (Acts conciously)
What is the autonomic nervous system?
The autonomic nervous system controls vital functions such as breathing, heart rate, digestion, and stress responses. (Acts unconciously)
What is the sympathetic nervous system?
The sympathetic nervous system controls the flight or fight response. It increases rate of energy expenditure and prepares the body for action.
What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
The parasympathetic nervous system controls the rest and digest response. It decreases rate of energy expenditure. The body enters an alarmed state.
