The Division Of The Nervous System Flashcards
What two parts is the nervous system divided into
Central nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral nervous system
What two components make up the central nervous system
Brain and spinal cord
What two components is the peripheral nervous system divided into
Somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
What two components is the autonomic system divided into
Sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system
Define the central nervous system
Comprises of the brain and spinal cord. It receives information from the senses and controls the body’s responses
Define the peripheral nervous system
The part of the nervous system outside of the brain and spinal cord
Define the somatic nervous system
A part of the peripheral nervous system responsible for carrying sensory and motor information to and from the central nervous system
Define the autonomic nervous system
Governs the brains involuntary activities and it is self-regulating (autonomous).
It is further divided into the sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and parasympathetic (rest and digest)
List the effects of the Sympathetic nervous system activating on the body
- increased pupil size
- increase in HR
- bronchial tubes in the lungs dilate
- sweat glands are stimulated
- adrenal medulla is stimulated to release adrenaline
- glycogen stored in the liver is converted into glucose
Explain what the parasympathetic nervous system does
The PNS relaxes the individual after the emergency has passed, it slow HR reduces blood pressure, digestion is resumed
