Why were teachers’ salaries drastically impacted by the Great Depression?
They are paid by the gov’t, who aren’t getting taxes. Thus their wages are lowered or they are laid off
Why did people call the Bennett Buggy the Bennett Buggy?
They didn’t like the car and they didn’t like the government (they just put up tariffs and stuff, making things worse).
Following the course of logic, they blame the car on the Prime Minister
What did it mean to be “on the dole”?
To be a man who can prove that he is unable to support his family, and thus receive welfare (in the form of food rations).
What did you have to turn in to receive social assistance?
Liquor permit, drivers license and license plate, home phone.
Why weren’t the payments for those on the dole ever made in cash?
Why did they have food available to be given to these people?
To prevent them from buying useless and expensive goods.
Since they are not trading with other countries, there is leftover food.
What was the weather like in the Prairies during the ’30s?
How would this affect the economy of the Prairies?
Dust, drought, grasshoppers. Cold, harsh winters.
The dust got on the crops and stopped growth.
The drought meant no water and dead crops.
The grasshoppers ate the crops and killed them.
The cows died cause it was cold :(
Who would live well in the 1930s?
The Prime Minister and people working in the government for him
Pawn shops, auctioneers, bankruptcy attourneys, debt collectors, discount stores…
What was fashion like during the ’30s?
Dark.
Long, boring dresses that hid legs and men couldn’t be aroused by them so they probably got really sad and turned to more sinister means for sexual arousal what am i saying you don’t need to remember this
