The Digestive Systum Flashcards
Function of the mouth?
Food is chewed into smaller pieces using teeth (mechanical digestion) and mixed with saliva which contains enzymes that start breaking down carbohydrates (chemical digestion)
Function of the oesophagus ?
A muscular tube that pushes food from the mouth to the stomach
What is the stomachs function?
Food is mixed with gastric juices, including hydrochloride acid (kills bacteria) and enzymes (break down proteins). The stomach churns the food into liquid called chyme.
What is the duodenum?
It connects the stomach to the small intestine
What is the function of the small intestine?
It is where 90% of digestion occurs. Minerals and nutrients are absorbed in the blood here
What are villi?
Vill are the small folds that cover in inside of the small intestine. Ville are adapted to absorb substances such as iron, glucose and amino acids in to the blood quickly and easily.
What is the function of the pancreas?
The pancreas is not part of the digestive system because food does not pass through it. However it does make two key digestive enzymes
What key enzymes does the pancreas produce and where do they pass through?
Amylase and lipas are the two key enzymes that the pancreas produces, they pass through the duodenum as pancreas juices.
What is the functions of the liver?
The liver is not a part of the digestive system as food does not pass through it. The liver produces bile.
What is the function of bile and where is it stored?
Bile is stored in the gall bladder and then passes through the small intestine to break down fats
What is the function of the large intestine?
The large intestine reabsorbs water from thee undigested food back into the blood stream.
What is the function of the rectum?
The rectum stores faeces before its ready to pass through the anus
What is the purpose of the anus?
The anus is where the food passes though and out of the body.
