Where does digestion begin?
Mouth.
What breaks down food in the mouth?
Saliva, teeth and tongue.
Where does the food go down after being consumed in the mouth?
The esophagus/gullet
Where does the food go after the esophagus?
The stomach.
How is the food broken down in the stomach?
Muscles crush and compact the food and acids break it down further.
What acid is found in the stomach?
Hydrochloric acid.
Where does the food go after the stomach?
The small intestine.
What happens in the small intestine?
Nutrients are absorbed.
Where does the food go after the small intestine?
The large intestine.
What happens in the large intestine?
Food is prepared for excretion by being turned into a solid and removing the water.
Where are the feces then stored?
The rectum.
Where is the waste then excreted?
Through the anus.
What is the main purpose of the Digestive System?
Break down food, absorb nutrients and excrete waste.
What is the order of the digestive system?
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
What are three nutrients absorbed from food?
Protein, Vitamin C and sugars.
Why is the digestive system so important for animals?
Allows them to digest food and extract nutrients out of it, breaks down food in the body, and excretes waste. Respiration is the breaking down of food into glucose.
