The Digestive System Flashcards
What is a system?
A system is a group of organs working together
What does digest mean?
Digest is to break down large food particles to smaller particles
Why do we need food?
Energy
Growth
Repair
What are the 5 steps of digestion?
Ingestion Digestion Absorption Assimilation Egestion
What are the 4 types of teeth?
Incisors
Canines
Premolars
Molars
What is the function of the Incisors?
Cut and slice food
What is the function of the Canies?
Grip and tear food
What is the function of the Premolars?
Chew and grind food
What is the function of the Molars?
Chew and grind food
What is Peristalsis?
Peristalsis is the muscular movement which pushes the food through the body
What is Amylase?
Amylase is an enzyme that breaks starch down to a sugar, maltose
What is an enzyme?
An enzyme is a chemical, found in living organism, that speed up the chemical reactions
What are the 9 organs?
Mouth Oesophagus Stomach Small intestine Large intestine Salivary glands Liver Gall bladder Pancreas
What is the mouths function?
Take in food
Crush food with the teeth
Amylase is added to the food
What is the oesophagus function?
Carry food down to the stomach
What is the stomachs function?
Churn the food
Add acid to the food
What is the small intestines function?
Further digestion by enzymes
Absorption of digested food into the blood
What is the large intestines function?
Water is absorbed into the blood
The waste left is prepare for egestion
What is the salivary glands function?
Make saliva, which contains an enzyme, amylase, to break starch down to smaller sugars
What is the livers function?
Produces liquid bile, which helps digest fat
Regulates the amount of each food in the blood
What is the gall bladders function?
Stores bile from liver until it is needed
What is the pancreas function?
Makes enzymes to break down food
