The development of cultural competence Flashcards
Ethnocentrism
ethnocentrism involves seeing the world a certain way based on one’s personal experience, rather than realizing there is a world with different experiences outside of the way in which one has grown accustomed
Diversity denial
Diversity denial occurs when some people acknowledge differences and cultural experiences, but deny that they hold any significant difference and how they interact with others…
it’s almost as if there is a sincere believe that everyone is basically the same as if there are no differences among people that are significant enough to preclude well intention efforts from being effective across cultures
Increase self-awareness
In order for people, to effectively increase their awareness of the ways in which they are similar to or different from others, it is beneficial to increase their awareness of their own cultural identity
Internal conflict
As ignorance decreases in awareness, increases, individuals begins to learn about experiences other than their own, and realize the impact their ignorance can have on others
Appreciation of diversity
One can begin to experience an external conflict as they wrestle with increased awareness of cultural differences, with new knowledge combs a new responsibility to use that knowledge well into enhance relationships rather than hurt them
Increased accountability
We must take a proactive approach to this internal conflict by assuming responsibility for our actions
Cultural advocacy
One way to be a part of the solution to this problem is to discover a personal style of advocating for the rights in appropriate treatment of others… not necessarily legal advocacy, but more so in clinical settings
