Birth rate
The number of births a yaer per 1000 of the total population.
Commonwealth
An independant state or community, especially a democratic republic. An international association consisting of the UK together with state that were part of the British Empire and dependencies.
Death rate
The number of deaths in a year per 1000 of the population.
De - industrialisation
This is the decline in the manufacturing industry (secondary)
Demographic Transition Model
The transition from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates as a country or region develops from a pre - industrial to an industrialised economc system.
Development
An event constituting a new stage in a changing situation. The way a country wants to improve economically.
Development Gap
The widening difference in levels of development between the world’s richest and poorest countries.
European Union
An association of European nations formed in 1993 for the purpose of achieving political and economic integration.
Fairtrade
Trade between companies in developed countries and producers in developing countries in which fair prices are paid to the producers.
Globalisation
Growth and spread of ideas across the world
Gross National Income (GNI)
Measurement of economic activity, calculated by dividing the gross (total) national income by the size of the population.
Human Development Index
A method of measuring development where GDP per capita, life expectancy and adult literacy are combined to give an overview.
Industrial Structure
A structure designed to fulfil a specific functionin industry or to support or house equipment, raw materials or communiation lines.
Infant Mortality
Number of babies that die under one year of age, per 1000 live births.
Information Technologies
The study or use of systems for storing, retrieving and sending information.
Intermediate Technology
Technology suitable for use in developing countries, typically making use of locally available resources.
International Aid
Money, goods and services given by the government of one country or multilateral institution such as the World Bank or IME to help another country.
Life expectancy
The average number of years a person is expected to live.
