• During the wartime conferences, Berlin and Germany were split into 4 zones. This was not an ideal long term solution.
• In December 1947, the soviets stormed out of the talks over the cities future because there was disagreements over what each superpower wanted to achieve by their presence in Berlin. USA wanted to rebuild Berlin’s economy, USSR wanted to keep it weak for their own benefits.
• March 1948 Trizonia was formed, put a clear divide between east (capitalist) west (communist)
• June 1948 new form of money called Deutschmark was introduced, acknowledged the fact there was 2 Germany’s.

• West new to force supplies into the east would start war
• operation vittles was launched to fly in supplies to the west.
• By Jan 1949 no fewer than 170,000 tonnes of supplies had been sent into west berlin via aircraft.
• 9th May 1949 stalin ended the blockade
