the design argument Flashcards

1
Q

what is an analogy?

A

An analogy is where we compare 2 different things, one that you know the other you don’t. By comparing the shared similarities we are able to understand the concept you didn’t understand.

Q

why is a rock ,watch and the natural world compared?

A

a rock has no evidence of design and so has no designer,a watch has evidence of design and is created by the watch maker. However the world does have evidence of design and so the”grand watcher “made it.

Q

what is Aquinas Archer analogy

A

when an arrow is in flight there is an implied Archer and you may assume it was directed(telos).the world is like this arrow in flight because of its order and regularity.

Q

Why did Aquinas think that the world couldn’t order themselves?

A

The world does not have the intelligence by itself like the food chain and seasons. However this may prove the existence of god fine tuning it.

Q

what was David Hume’s 1st criticism?

A

The analogies don’t work-objects of the human world is to different to those of the natural world. If comparing you should use something organic like a cabbage.

Q

what was David Hume’s 2nd criticism?

A

they don’t imply the existence of God.the world is to flawed for the perfect Judeo Christian god to have created this world. However this universe may have been made by a sensile god or an apprentice god.

Q

What was David Hume’s 3rd criticism?

A

its guility of anthropormophism-giving non human objects or animals human characteristics like the”grand watch maker” which has now been made redundant by science.

Q

what was David Hume’s 4th criticism?

A

the epicurean hypothesis-given infinitive time and infinitive number of probabilities will happen so this ordered universe is possible and may only be specail because people appreciate it.

Q

what is fine tuning?

A

The conditions for the world to be like this is so unlikely that it must be a result of an intelligent designer.

Q

what is foundational fine tuning?

A

the strong forces binding atoms together-electromagnetic force
gravitational force binding the solar system
secondary elements like carbon require these forces

Q

what is locational fine tuning?

A

right relationship and tilt from the sun
right atmospheric conditions-gravitional pull and gas proportions
right earth crust-thickness and mineral composition

17
Q

what argument is the design argument?

A

An inductive argument
