What is the panca sila?
A
Lay Buddhists may choose to focus on living a life of compassion or they may choose to take one or several of the five precepts which are values or commitment to avoiding certain types of actions

What are the five values of the panca sila?
A
- Undertake to refrain from harming. Monks would go vegetarian to avoid harming animals. This is called ahimsa
- undertake to refrain from taking what is not freely given. Monks would not steal
- undertake from misuse of sexuality. Monks are not allowed to commit adultery, rape etc
- Undertake to refrain from Misuse of speech. Monks would not lie, gossip, slander or use abusive language
- undertake to refrain from taking intoxicants. Monks would not take drugs or get drunk as it clouds the mind
