The Crucifixtion Flashcards
Why is the image of Jesus of peace, love and compassion not a complete one?
We must remember as well that Jesus seemed to cause conflict and tension wherever he went. His words were often challenging, even threatening, it was listening. He was a very real threat to religious tradition and political stability
What are the literary characteristics the Passion accounts in the Gospels?
The arrest, trial, and Crucifixion of Jesus are the most extensively reporter events in the gospel. The gospel seem key to these events, as if everything in the Gospels is intended to prepare the reader for Jesus is execution. Even the writing style of the Passion accounts is much different from that of the Gospels’ typical stories and short sayings for instance we find many more details in these accounts than other parts of the Gospels
Why did the Evangelists use a style different ok then typical stories and sayings to tell the story of Jesus’ death?
The death and Resurrection of Jesus are at the heart of the Christian story. His crucifixion have to be carefully explain to the early community of faith
What happened to Jesus was totally contrary to what people have been expecting for the Messiah. Their desire for information about these events would’ve been natural and intense
The Evangelists were writing to in for the early followers of the risen Jesus. These followers than cells would confront almost immediate persecution for the faith in him remind you that Jesus had suffered persecution and death would be a constant consolation to them
With what historical Jewish event is the Last Supper linked? What two main points do the Synoptic Gospels make about Jesus words and actions at the Last Supper?
The last supper is linked with gods delivering the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and the Israelites pledge of loyalty to God in the Sinai Covenant.
The Synoptic Gospels suggest these two main points by Jesus‘s words and actions of the last supper:
Jesus had had his approaching death in mind as he got his disciples for that meal
He made a real connection between the meal itself and his death on the cross
What is the Roman Catholic conviction regarding the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist?
Roman Catholics believes that the risen Jesus is truly and fully present in the consecrated bread and wine of the Eucharist
Explain the meaning of a statement: Jesus could read the signs of the times regarding his death
Jesus could foresee his future by just by looking at what was happening around him. He was aware, for instance, of the building hostility towards him, the tension in Jerusalem resulting from his presence there, and the way his people had treated their prophets throughout history
Why is Jesus’ free acceptance of his death central to all Christian theology?
Christians believe that Jesus saved all people from sin and death only because he levelly sacrificed his ho to God. Jesus is death would not have had the effects of saving the world from synonym if his life had been taken by others or if he had been certain that he would be raised from Zedd in three days
The High Priest Caiaphas asked Jesus if he was the Messiah. What was significant about Jesus‘ answer?
Jesus not only accepted the title ‘Messiah’ but even expanded that to say he was uniquely in touch with God. Jesus‘ response drew an immediate charge of blasphemy from Caiaphas. In other words and responding as he did Jesus had gone too far. He had taken the final step toward virtually guaranteeing that he would be executed
Why did the Jewish leaders bring their charges against Jesus to the Romans?
To carry out the death penalty against Jesus, the Jewish leaders needed to help with the Romans. The Jewish leaders didn’t have the authority to carry out such a punishment - they weren’t allowed to
Why did Pontius Pilate not accept the Jews first charge against Jesus?
Blasphemy was a religious offense, not a political one that in anyway threatened the Roman state
Why do scholars debate the meaning of Jesus is utterance on the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me“?
If the words reflect the sense of despair, this in turn would seem to suggest that Jesus had a certain lack of faith in his Father’s love for him
Explain the differences and similarities between these metaphors for Jesus‘s death on the cross: Suffering Servant, Paschal Lamb, and Ransom
The Suffering Servant, whom Isaiah wrote about hundreds of years before Jesus, was described as one who suffered greatly not for his own sins but in order to save the people from theirs. He was given God’s spirit and his mission is to bring justice to the nations. The servant is compared to a lamb that is led away to slaughter and killed
John’s Gospel refers to Jesus as the new Paschal Lamb who takes away the sins of the world. During the first Passover, the Paschal Lamb‘s blood was the sign that spared the Israelites from death and led to their liberation from slavery and the new life in the Promised Land. Both the suffering servant and Paschal Lamb terminology makes sense to Jews but not to Gentiles
Mark’s Gospel describes Jesus‘s death as a ransom, which in the Roman world was the price paid to release a slave
Each of the metaphors has a common understanding of the meaning of the cross: when Jesus gave up his life for our sake, he freed us from sin
The statement that Jesus died for our sins is important, but to what confusion can it lead?
It can give a sense, for instance, that Jesus had to die in our place because an angry God demanded payment for past offenses. This image of God runs directly contrary to Jesus‘ message that God is truthfully loving and forgiving
What did Jesus mean when he said that his followers should take up their crosses (metaphor) and follow him?
Just as Jesus poured out his love on the cross, Christians are called to give themselves to others with unlimited unconditional love - the sort of love that involves personal sacrifice
