Senator McCarthy
Made claims that Soviet spies infiltrated the government. Accused people in the government to be Communists. Claims were eventually rejected.
McCarthyism
Used to describe an accusation of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard to evidence.
HUAC
House of UnAmerican Activities Committee
Under the House of Representatives. Investigated everyday Americans of being Communist. Targeted entertainers.
Tydings Committee
Under the Senate. Investigated within the government of people being Communists. McCarthy led this committee which later led to the HUAC.
Blacklists
List of suspected Communists. Usually had entertainers. People on the list where unable to find work because it was secretly distributed.
How did people avoid punishment in both the Salem Witch trials and Communist “hunts”?
They had to confess and accuse others.
What are the main motivations for spreading the hysteria in The Crucible?
To seek revenge and protect oneself.
