First section of introduction - proctor emotions
The “Crucible” written by Arthur Miller in 1953 reflects the horrors which were faced in Salem in 1692. The central character, John Proctor, is a character who faces a vast amount of intense emotions and experiences. Throughout the play we can see this range of emotions and themes and intensity built up from the manipulation from Abigail, souring emotions with Elizabeth to the final scene with the peak of intense emotions where John Proctor is faced with the agonising question where he could either confess to witchcraft and stay alive or not confess and die.

This intense decision which Proctor makes sparks a lot of emotions in him both anger and sadness with these emotions also being brought about by Abigail and her cunningness and manipulation to get what she wants as well as the broken marriage between Elizabeth and Proctor. Arthur Miller has been effective in using these techniques and themes to show this fluctuation of intense emotions in Proctor and to capture these emotions which would have been faced during the time of McCarthyism faced in Salem. The reader can see that John Proctor really was the target of the arrow, facing lots of sadness from losing his wife to the horrible decision of confessing and dying; however Proctor said what he promised and fell like an ocean destroying the court and their corruption and dying as a hero. From the first few scenes of being introduced to Proctor these high intense emotions can be seen. The intense scene between Proctor and his affair Abigail shows this intensity with his obsessor Abigail pushing herself onto Proctor but the resistance from Proctor trying to get over this sin which he had done shows this theme of acting on your conscience. There is a shift in Proctor’s emotions to frustration and sadness and this theme of corruption from the court is seen after his innocent wife is carted away to Jail after the set up of a poppet made by Abigail. This strikes anger in Proctor for the court taking Elizabeth away despite the fact of her innocence shown when Proctor says
Proctor also gets furious at Abigail and has an explosion of rage towards Abigail at the court. This is shown in the stage directions when it says

Proctor’s emotions turn to anger with the strong urge to defeat Abigail. Proctor takes Mary to court to confess however all plans fail with Abigail accusing Mary Warren. This theme of corruption is seen at the very end of Act 3 where Proctor loses it with Danforth and the court yelling…
This theme of corruption can be seen very strongly in act 3 and the ending of act 3 where Proctor exposesses the court of their corruption and shows his anger at the court. Proctor says “this be fraud” and then says

The peak of intensity is seen at the end of the play with this battle with integrity and conscience where Proctor has the decision to confess to witchcraft and stay alive or not confess and die. There were the reasons for him to confess to be with his family however by doing this he would be betraying his friends. Proctor shows his anger towards this decision to the court saying
