What lie did John Proctor tell to Elizabeth which makes her more suspicious of him?
The lie John Proctor told Elizabeth is that when he saw Abigail, he was only alone with her for a little bit, and most of the time they were in a group. Thi makes her more suspicious of him because she knows that he isn’t telling the truth about Abigail.
Why hasn’t John told the court what he knows? What does Elizabeth attribute his not telling to?
John hasn’t told the court what he knows becaus he does not want his affair with Abigail to get out. Abigail could then use this agaisnt him and it could ruin his reputation. Also, now that Abigail is seen as a saint, he thinks that people won’t believe him if he says she is a fake. Elizabeth attributes to this because Proctor doesn’t want her to think he has any feelings or affection towards Abigail.

Reverend Hale comes to visit the Proctors to tell them that Elizabeth’s name was mentioned in court. He also tells them some of the other people who were accused and warns them of the troubles going on in Salem.
