Connotation
The association, ideas and images conjured by a particular word
Simile
A comparison that is formed by using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor
Making a comparison by asserting one thing in another
Anthromorphism
Imagery that gives human qualities to animals, objects or Gods
Zoomorphic
The use of imagery relating to animals
Euphemism
A mild or indirect word or phrase used in place of a direct or harsh expression
Dysphemism
A derogatory or unpleasant term used instead of a pleasant or neutral one. Eg “cancer stick”
Idiom
A common expression that has a different meaning to the actual words in the phrase. Eg “it’s raining cats and dogs”

The attribution of human characteristics to something non-human

An authors blending of human senses to describe something
