The Cosmological Argument Flashcards
1
Q
What is the cosmological argument?
A
- A posteriori argument
- Looks at the functionality of the universe, cause and order
- Through eternal observation and experience that God exists
2
Q
What is the argument from motion?
A
- Some things in the world are in motion
- Whatever is in motion is put into motion by something else. Nothing can move itself.
- If A put into motion by B, and B is also in motion, then B must have been put into motion by something else again
- If this goes on to infinity, then there is no first mover
- If there is no first mover, then there is no other mover, and so nothing is in motion
- Therefore there must be a first mover
- The first mover is God
3
Q
What is the argument from causation?
A
- We find causes and effects
- Nothing can be the cause of itself
- Causes follow in order
- If you remove a cause, you remove its effect
- Therefore if there is no first cause there will be no later causes
- Therefore there cannot be an infinite regress of causes
- There must be a first cause which is not itself caused
- God is the first cause
5
Q
What is Kalam’s Cosmological Argument?
A
- Of anything that begins to exist, something causes it to exist
- The universe began to exist
- Therefore there is a cause of the existence of the universe
6
Q
What is the argument from contingency?
A
- Things in the universe exist contingently
- If it is possible for something not to exist, then at some time, it does not exist.
- If everything exists contingently, then it is possible that at some time there was nothing in existence
- If at some time nothing was in existence, nothing could begin to existence
- Since things did begin to exist, there was never nothing in existence
- Therefore, there is something that does not exist contingently, but must exist
- This necessary being is God.
