The Correspondent Principle Flashcards
Teaching the skills future capitalist employees need
In ‘schooling in capitalism America (1976) bowels and Gintis suggested that there is a correspondence between values learnt at school and the way which workplaces operate
Correspondence principle
The values they suggest are taught through the “hidden curriculum” the hidden curriculum consists consist of those things that pupils learn through the experience o attending school rather then the main curriculum subjects taught at the school.
Values learnt that are necessary for them to tow the line in manual jobs.
- passive subservience (of pupils to teachers) correspondence to passive subservience of workers to managers
- acceptance of hiarachy (authority of teachers) correspond to authority of managers
- motivation by external rewards ( grades not learning) corresponds to being motivated by wedges not the joy of the job
What does the corresponding principle argue ?
It argues that school and work are similar which creates new generations of workers ready to accept their lot and accept capitalism
