Council of Ministers: Composed of one representative from each government, with an advisory role to the High Authority.

Court of Justice: Composed of independent judged in charge of the interpretation and enforcement of common legislation.

What were the further steps from the ECSC?

A

Through the Messina meeting (1955) there was an agreement to extend economic integration beyond coal and steel.

The European Economic Community (EEC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC) were created by the Rome Treaty (1957).

What is the history behind the creation of the EU?

A

The TEU was the result of the common reaction to the new European map after the fall of the Berlin wall, as well as to the new international order emerging from the end of the Cold War (1989).

As a new stage, the EU embraced the three existing European Communities and two areas of intergovernmental cooperation.

A

France, Germany, Italy, and the three Benelux countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands).

A

Date: 25 March 1957

Created the EAEC and EEC.

The treaty of Rome completely changed the dialogue between the intergovernmental and supranational institutions. Before this point, they co-existed but had nothing to do with each other.

1973: United Kingdom, Ireland and Denmark.

1986: Spain and Portugal

A

Date: 20 September 1976

Through the Council’s decision on the direct election of the Parliamentary Assembly members.

The only European institution provided with direct democratic legitimacy, like any national parliament.
