Battle of Fallen Timbers

A
  • After the defeat of the British, colonists begin settling on land west of the Appalachian mountain
  • Native resistance was still strong in the Northern great lakes region; protected their land from invading settlers
  • Natives embarrass American militia; Hamilton, Washington, and most others in the government wanted to respond with a show of force; asks Congress for 5,000 men… men train for multiple years and subsequently defeat the Native alliance
  • Makes Natives sign the Treat of Greenville; an unequal treaty that moved the line that separated their territories; this process would develop into a pattern

Whiskey Rebellion

A
  • in 1794, Farmers in PA rebel against the Whiskey tax (a tax on wheat)
  • Farmers were in open rebellion as they could not enact change through their political system
  • Rural PA in open rebellion
  • Hamilton tells Washington that they need a show of force; asks Congress for 15,000 troops
  • Purpose is intimidation and securing the authority of the US government
  • With the quelling of the Whiskey Rebellion and the Battle of Fallen Timbers, Washington and Hamilton had felt as though they had made progress in firming the federal government’s authority
