Right to bear and keep arms
2nd amendment
Freedom of speech, freedom of press, right to assemble and right to petition
1st amendment
Protects people from having the military stay in their homes
3rd amendment
No search (papers, persons,houses) and seizure without reason
4th amendment
Right to due process of law
- law must be followed by the government and citizens
- protection from Double Jeopardy- cannot be tried twice for the same crime
- right to “take the 5th” protects people from having to testify against themselves
- government cannot take property without paying for it. The power of the government to take property is called eminent domain
5th amendment
Right for trial by jury of your peers
6th amendment
Civil trial by jury. Civil law is not about crimes
7th amendment
Protects people from excessive bail
- bail is the money that the court can charge to allow an accused person to not go to jail while waiting for trial
- it also protects people from cruel and unusual punishments
8th amendment
Says that just because a right is not written in the constitution does not mean that people do not have the right
9th amendment
Says that any power that is not given to federal government in the constitution is given to either the states or the people
10th amendment
