The conduction system Flashcards
What is meant by the cardiac muscle being myogenic?
The capacity of the heart to generate its own electrical impulse, which causes the cardiac muscle to contract
Where is the SA node located?
Right atrial wall
What is the SA node known as?
The pacemaker
What are the five structures involved in the conduction system?
SA node, AV node, Bundle of His, Bundle branches, Purkunje fibres
What does the SA node stand for?
Sinoatrial node
What does the AV node stand for?
Atrioventricular node
What is the definition of the conduction system?
A set of structures in the cardiac muscle which create and transmit an electrical impulse, forcing the atria and ventricles to contract
What is the order of the conduction system?
- The SA node located in the right atrium wall generates the electrical impulse and fibres it through the atria walls causing them to contract
- The AV node collects the impulse and delays it for approx 0.1 seconds to allow the atria to finish contracting
- The impulse is passed down the bundle of his through the septum to the apex of the heart
- Impulse passes from the bundle of his into the bundle branches which carry the impulse to the base of each ventricle
- The impulse is passed to the purkunje fibres which distribute the impulse through the ventricle walls causing them to contract
