The concept of a place Flashcards
A ‘place’ is all things that come together to make that place
Its location
The physical characteristics
The human characteristics(who lives there and what they’re like) plus the human features of the landscape(land use, built environment)
Everything flows in and out of that place, e.g. people, money, ideas, resources.
What is meant by ‘sense of place’
The emotional meaning that a place has
An insider
Someone who is familiar with a place and who feels welcome in that place, i.e. they feel that they belong there.
An outsider
Someone who feels unwelcome or excluded from a place, i.e. they don’t feel that they belong here
Experienced places
Are places that people have spent time in. When a person visits or lives in a place, their experiences, such as the things they see and the people they meet, shape their sense of that place.
Media Places
Are people that people have not been to, but have created a sens of place for through their depiction in media
