The Concept of a Hazard Flashcards
What does adaptation mean?
Adjusting living conditions, to reduce levels of vulnerability to a hazard.
What does fatalism mean?
The view that nothing can be done to shape the outcome, leading to people doing little to mitigate against it.
What is perception?
The way people view the threat of a hazardous event. This determines the course of action taken by the individuals or the response they expect from governments and other organisations.
What is the disaster/risk management cycle?
Main goal is promotion of sustainable livelihoods and development for fast and long lasting recovery
Illustrates the ongoing process by which governments, businesses and society plan/reduce the impact of disasters, reacting during and immediately following an event in order to recover.
Pre-disaster includes - risk assessment, mitigation and preparedness
Response includes - warning, saving, assistance and assessing damage
Post disaster includes - assistance, restoration, reconstruction, economic recovery, development and mitigation
What is the park model/disaster response curve?
Shows the varying impacts of a hazard over time.
Four stages - Pre-disaster, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction.
Shows the quality of life, duration of decline, and speed/nature of recovery.
Describe the first stage of the park model - Pre-disaster
Shows an early stage is pre-disaster and shows a state of equalibrium where people prepare and attempt to prevent. Then the event causes quality of life to drop and people take immediate action to preserve lives and buildings
Describe the second stage of the park model - Relief
medical and rescue services, can last a few hours to several days depending on magnitude of event - life quality starts to slowly increase.
Describe the third stage of the park model - Rehabilitation
People try to return to a normal state by providing food, water and shelter can last from a few days to a few weeks
Describe the fourth stage of the park model - Reconstruction
Infrastructure and property are reconstructed and crops are regrown. This helps people learn how to better respond to the next hazard. Can take from weeks to several years.
