Blood Quantum:
A strategy used by governments and tribes to authenticate the amount of “Native Blood” an individual has by tracing individual and group ancestry
Racialized Socio-Poliical Formation:
Emphasizes the extent to which race is a social and political construction that operates on two levels, the micro (individual) and the macro (society)
“Full Blooded”:
An individual or group that is deemed to be one hundred percent Native American without any White or Black ancestry.
“Mixed Blood”:
An individual or group that has been deemed to have a mixed ancestry. Someone who has some Native American ancestry along with White or Black ancestries.
Treaty Party:
Cherokee individuals that signed or were in agreeance with the Treaty of New Echota which gave Cherokees who signed 5 mil. for land in OK in exchange
National Party:
Cherokee individuals that were against the signing of the Treaty of New Echota and instead staying in present-day Oklahoma to resit forced relocations
Keetoowahs:
A religious group dedicated to the preservation of traditional Cherokee practices and beliefs
Dawes Act of 1887:
Gave the presetting permission to break up reservation land and allot land based on Native American Rolls
Race as a nation:
Racial metaphors of blood and kinship could be used to define a collective superorganism
Race as blood quantum
Basing the legitimacy of someone’s racial identity by their kinship and ancestry
