The comparative method is carried out in the mind of the researcher. They identify two groups that are similar except for one variable

Durkheim - study of suicide levels and found that more catholics committed suicide than protestants
What are the practical strengths and limitations of the comparative method?
Strengths: No cost, easy and can study past events
Limitations: Less variable control

Strengths: Reliable and representative, avoids artificiality which makes it more valid
Limitations: Lacks validity
