The Commercial Use Of Plant Hormones Flashcards
what are climacteric fruits?
fruits which continue to ripen after they have been harvested.
what is an example of a climacteric fruit?
banana, avocado.
what is an example of a non climacteric fruit?
oranges, strawberry.
what plant hormone is responsible for the ripening of fruits?
ethene.
what happens if part of a bunch of green bananas are placed in a bag with a ripe banana?
the group with the ripe banana will ripen faster than the rest of the bunch, even if temperature is the same (temperature is control variable.) ethene from ripe banana stimulates the growth of unripe bananas.
why are unripe fruits desirable?
unripe fruit is harder and less easily damaged during transport. it reduces the amount of fruit wasted due to damage or being too ripe for consumption.
what are weeds?
plants that grow where they are not wanted.
how does auxin work as a weedkiller?
the plant will overgrow and will become unsustainable so they die.
why are synthetic auxins good as weedkillers?
they are cheap to produce
low toxicity to animals
they are selective so only weeds die.
