Reasons for colonisation
A
To provide England with a base from which to attack Spanish colonies
- England also hoped to rival Spain’s overseas Empire
- Trade was vital to the English economy - If England could access goods from Virginia they would be less dependent on European trade.

Sent a fact finding expedition to Virginia
This made initial contact with the Native American tribes.
Raleigh persuaded men to leave England and make the voyage.
He also raised funds by convincing merchants to invest.

They left too late to plant crops
Difficulty hunting -
Gunpowder had been spoiled on the journey
