A

the nazis and ussr made a pact which allowed them to divide poland between them.
this caused the usa to have a lack of trust for the ussr.

the atlantic charter (1941)

A

this was made to ensure economic and political freedom in europe. the us did not want the ussr to try and convert europe into communists.
different ideas meant the two countries could not agree for long.

stalingrad (1943)

A

the ussr lost over a million men and wanted the us to help by opening a second front but they never.
this caused the ussr to lack trust in the usa.

yalta (1945)

A

ussr wanted more dictatorships in europe (including germany) as they thought it’d give them more security post war.
us didn’t want want that and wanted to divide germany into 4 parts shared between themselves, the uk , france and ussr.
it was feared they’d fall out over their different ideas.

potsdam (1945)

A

US were annoyed at the ussr for forcing eastern european countries to become communist. it was said an “iron curtain” had been drawn over europe.
the USSR had misunderstood and thought that they had said this was allowed.
this led to both sides feeling betrayed and threatened.

the atomic bomb

A

was tested in a desert in new mexico on the 16 of july 1945 after 3 years of research and $2,000,000,000 spent.
vaporised the stainless steel tower it was tested in.
melted the sand to glass.
explosion equivalent to 67 million dynamite sticks.

hiroshima attack

A

president harry truman gave japan a chance to surrender at the potsdam conference before dropping the bomb but the japanese prime minister suzuki declined. a few days later on the 6th of august the us dropped the atomic bomb on hiroshima killing over 100,000 people instantly

nagasaki attack

A

after the hiroshima attack the us dropped a second atomic bomb on nagasaki killing around 50,000 people.

impact of the bomb

A

the bomb caused a mysterious untreatable illness which was noticed 4 days after the attack. it was later found that this was necrosis and meant bodies had no white blood cells to fight infection causing bodies to rot.

A

the uk, us and france joined all their zones to create trizonia. they wanted a capitalist economy and introduced the deutshemark to help grow this.
stalin felt they were using their zones to gang up on him.

berlin blockade

A

stalin tried to shut of the west of berlin (the allies part) and stop any cargo going in.
the blockade lasted for 318 days.

the berlin airlift

A

the allies had planes fly in supplies to west germany during the blockade showing the power of capitalism.
there was 275,000 planes transporting 1.5 million goods which averaged as a plane every 3 minutes

east vs west.

A

trizonia officially become the federal republic of germany (west germany) and the soviet part became the german democratic republic (east germany) both sides constantly trying to prove they were best.
the german democratic republic was not democratic at all in fact it was a communist dictatorship.

A

after the war the communist north was controlled by soviet troops and the capitalist south by american troops

both lots of troops withdrew in 1948 but korea kept a permanent border

1950 invasion

A

in 1950 north korea invaded south korea killing 75000 men and successfully taking over seoul.
they then went on to capture everywhere except pusan

UN support

A

truman wanted to help south korea to prevent the spread of communism, they appealed at the UN, russia didn’t use their veto because they were boycotting UN meetings at the time.
North Korea refused to withdraw their troops so UN soldiers went in as support.

Pyongyang

A

on october 7th 1950 united nations troops moved in to attack north korea and by october 12th they captured pyongyang and the yalu river which bordered china.
china retaliated helping north korea sending 250,000 pushing the UN troops out.

negotiation

A

in june 1951 more UN troops were sent in pushing the north koreans out. there was now a stalemate.
after 2 years of negotiation Dwight D Eisenhower stepped in as president and ended the war. A demilitarised zone was set up on the korean border
