He believed in civil disobedience was the best way to fight injustice
What happened in 1960
Black students in North Carolina sat in an all white lunch counter in a shop thus starting the ‘sit in’ campaign against segregation facilities. Both black and white became a part of this campaign. Many were jailed or attacked by whites
Who were the Freedom riders
The black and white people who travelled together on buses in the south in an attempt to force desegregation of transportation
What happened as a result of the Freedom riders?
Many were arrested , beaten up by whites but in 1961 the segregated interstate transport was outlawed
What happened in Birmingham, Alabama?
In 1963 Martin Luther king Jr led a mass march to expose racism in the city
Why is the Birmingham match significant?
The attack by police on defenceless men , women and children made the front page news across the USA and President Kennedy pressurised the governor into desegregating Birmingham.
What else did Martin Luther king Jr do in 1963
He organised a march on the US Captial , Washington DC, to demand equal rights for all . Where he gives his “I have a dream “ speech where he outlines his hopes for a nation in which all people would be free and equal .
What were the Freedom Schools
Schools set up by black and white civil rights activists from northern states which focused on black history and basic literacy skills. They also registered thousands of black voters
What happened as a result of the Freedom Schools?
There was a violent backlash from the whites and 3 activists were murdered
What happened as a result of the Civil Rights Movement?
The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1964 and outlawed the segregated and discrimination in employment in all public facilities.
Why did Martin Luther king launch a campaign to secure voting rights?
Despite the Civil Rights Act , very few black Americans in Alabama were registered to vote because of intimidation by white authorities and supremacists
