The Circulatory System: heart Flashcards
What is the function of the heart?
To continuously pump blood around the body
How many times approximately does your heart beat per minute? How much blood is pumped?
75 beats per minute and 50 ml of blood is pumped with each beat
How many milliliters are in one liter? (A large bottle of milk is one liter).
1000 ml = 1 liter
What can you use to hear your heartbeat and where do you place it?
Stethoscope (from Greek: “stetho” means breast) - place it on the breastbone to listen
What is the name of the tubes that carry blood?
Blood vessels
What is the purpose of valves?
To keep blood flowing in one direction
How many chambers does the heart have and what are they called?
Four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle
What is the function of the septum?
To separate left from right side, and prevent deoxygenated and oxygenated blood from mixing
Which vessels carry blood away from the heart and which are the main ones?
Arteries; aorta and pulmonary artery
Why is the muscle wall on the left side of the heart so thick?
The left side of the heart has to pump blood all around the body.
What is a hole in the heart and why is it dangerous?
The septum has a hole in it and blood from both sides of the heart can mix together.
Why were you squeezing a tennis ball in the lab?
To simulate the force needed to squeeze blood out of the heart.
How do you calculate the number of beats your heart has done your whole life if you know: how many minutes you have been alive and that the heart beats about 75 times per minute?
You multiply the number of minutes you have been alive by 75.
What happens to blood after it is pumped from the heart around the body?
It returns to the heart in order to be pumped to the lungs to be oxygenated.
