The Circulatory System Flashcards
Plasma
One of the four fundamental states of matter
Haemoglobin
A red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of vertebrates
Aorta
It is the largest artery in the body and the heart pumps blood from the left ventricle into the aorta.
Venae cavae
The venae cavae are two large veins that return deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart
Septum
The septum is the cartilage in the nose that separates he nostrils
Atria
The upper two heart chambers are called the atria.
Atria are are separated by a septum into the left atrium and the right atrium.
Ventricles
the lower chambers of the heart where blood goes when it leaves the atria
Pulmonary artery
Pulmonary artery:brings deoxygenated blood from the body to the heart.
Valves
Valves: Gateways that open and close to let blood flow through the heart, and stop backflow in the vein
Pulse
Pulse: A wave of vibrations that passes through an artery in response to blood being forced out of the left ventricle.
Oxygenated blood
Oxygenated blood:Blood rich in oxygen that comes from the lungs.
Deoxygenated blood
Deoxygenated blood: Blood that comes from other parts of the body that has less oxygen, and more carbon dioxide. It must go to the lungs to get more oxygen
Healthy heart
Healthy heart: A balanced diet, exercise and rest are very important for a healthy heart.
