The Circulatory System Flashcards
What is plasma? and what does it carry? (4)
Plasma carries important substances around the body
- Dissolved food substances such as glucose
- Hormones to got to their target cells
- Plasma Proteins such as Anti Bodies
- Waste products such as urea.
Describe the adaptations of a RBC (4)
- They are very small and can pass through the smallest blood vessels.
- They are shaped like biconcave disc so that they have a large surface area to exchange oxygen quickly.
- They contain haemoglobin to bind with oxygen
- Do not contain nucleus so more haemoglobins can fit.
What is made when haemoglobin when it combines with oxygen to form
Oxyhaemoglobin
What are the 3 blood vessels?
- Arteries
- Capillaries
- Veins
What are the Jobs of these BV?
Arteries: Transport blood away from the heart to body tissues.
- Capillaries link arteries to veins to allow materials to pass between the blood and the tissues
- Veins transport blood back to the heart from the tissues.
What are the Structures of these BV
Arteries have thick muscular walls and elastic walls to resist hbp.
Capillaries have permeable walls so substances can be transferred between the blood and the tissues
Veins have a large lumen and valves to prevent back flow the pressure is low.
Pulmonary Arteries takes….
Deoxygenated blood to the lungs
Aorta take oxygenated blood
to the body
Vena cava brings
deoxygenated blood from the body
Pulmonary veins bring…
oxygenated blood from the lungs
The left and right ventricles pump blood into
the arteries.
Left atria relieve blood from…
the veins
Pulmonary veins and vena cava are the main veins…
which return blood back to the heart.
Aorta and Pulmonary arteries carry blood…
away from the heart.
Why does left ventricle have thicker walls
Needs to pump blood a further distance the whole body.
