The circulatory system Flashcards
Blood vessels
A blood vessel is a tube like structure that transports blood around the body, there are 3 main types of blood vessels, veins, arteries, capillaries
Lumen
Blood cells have hollow centres called lumen this is where the blood flows.
Arteries
Arteries transport blood away from the heart
They have thick walls because blood flows through them at a higher pressure
Capillaries
Small blood vessels that act as a network between arteries and veins delivering blood to organs
Veins
Thin walls, carry blood to the heart at a lower pressure.
valves to stop blood flowing back from where it came
Double circulatory system
Blood vessels are organised into the double circulatory system, where blood flows through two loops.
Explain the loops in a double circulatory system
One loop carries oxygenated blood from the heart to all the organs
and the other carries deoxygenated blood away from the heart and to the lungs
Name the 4 chambers of the heart
The left and right ventricles and the left and right atria
