The Circulatory System Flashcards
What are the components of the blood?
Plasma, Red Blood Cells (RBC), White Blood Cells (WBC) and Platelets
What is the main function of plasma?
Plasma is the liquid component of the blood, it transports blood cells (WBC,RBC,platelets), nutrients, antibodies, hormones and waste produced during cellular respiration.
True or False? The plasma is included in the formed elements of the blood.
False. The RBC, WBC and Platelets make up the formed elements of the blood.
Describe the function of the RBC
The red blood cells help to transport oxygen throughout the body and to pick up cell waste (CO2). When it reaches the alveoli in the lungs, it releases the CO2 and picks up a fresh load of oxygen.
Describe the function of the Platelets
Platelets help in the process of forming scabs and to heal injuries.
Describe the function of the WBC
White Blood cells protect the body; some neutralize pathogens (bacteria, viruses) and others get rid of dead or damages cells.
Name the main parts of the circulatory system.
Heart, Arteries, Capillaries, and veins.
Name the two types of circulation that occur in the circulatory system.
Systemic circulation and Pulmonary circulation
Explain the role of Pulmonary Circulation.
This type of circulation carries blood that contains carbon dioxide to the lungs to get rid of it and reload it with oxygen.
Explain the role of Systemic Circulation.
Systemic circulation carries oxygenated blood to the cells of the body to supply them with oxygen and nutrients. It also collects their waste products: carbon dioxide and water.
Describe the function of a main part of the circulatory system: The Heart
The heart is a muscle that acts like a pump and pushes blood by contracting over 60 times per minute.
Describe the function of a main part of the circulatory system: The Arteries
Arteries take blood out of the heart. The aorta is the largest artery of the body.
Describe the function of a main part of the circulatory system: The Capillaries
Capillaries are small blood vessels where exchanges occur by diffusion between the blood and the cells.
Describe the function of a main part of the circulatory system: The Veins
Veins take blood to the heart.
What are two ways your body can make antibodies?
By getting the disease or by getting a vaccine.
