The Circulatory System Flashcards
Components of the circulatory system
Heart: muscular organ that transporte blood around the body
Blood vessels
Blood
Componentes of blood & functions
1) Platelets: help prevent bleeding
2) white blood cells: fight infection, defend the body
3) red blood cells: transports oxygen, contains haemoglobin
4) plasma: carries nutrients in blood
Function of the circulatory system
Transports blood around the body, nutrients, hormones and delivers waste products
Arteries function, adaptations
Distributes oxygenated blood around your body, thickest because blood with oxygen experiences greater pressure, needing to be stronger
— thick wall, small lumen: withstand high pressure as it transports oxygen-bound blood
Veins function, adaptations
Carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart (apart from pulmonary vein)
— contains valves to prevent backwards blood flow
— large lumen: more efficient
— thinner walls than arteries: more efficient
Capillaríes function, adaptations
—Connects smallest branches of veins and arteries
—Allow exchange to occur between blood and body cells through diffusion (pathway solely one endothelial cell thick)
Phagocytes
Phagocytosis: processor ingestión of bacteria etc.
Engulf, recognise and absorb waste material in body
Lymohocytes
Produce antibodies for pathogens
